Grade 7 Students Inspired by Navy Officer

To kick off Veteran's week, we had a very special guest come to Mr. Wagner’s Grade 7 class. Her name is Petty Officer Second Class Balog. She talked to us about how important it is to remember the people who fought for our country. We were very fortunate to have her here!

Petty Officer Balog is originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and she has been in the military for 16 years. She explained to us how blessed we are to live in Canada.

We learned that John McCrae, who wrote “In Flanders Fields”, was a soldier in World War 1 and helped a lot other people in many different ways.

The toughest situation P.O. Balog has ever had to deal with was regarding a ship that was carrying illegal immigrants into Canada. The boat was very dirty and she said that, “It was really hard to see how these people live.”

P.O. Balog has two medals: one from the Queen for her art work and one medal was for being in the military for twelve years.  Also, she will get a second medal once she works there for twenty years.

P.O. Balog’s favorite part of her job is shooting the guns! She stated that she would rather serve our country than become a mother. She was taught to serve Canada before serving herself and her family.

Her best experience was when she got to go on a helicopter ride for the first time and the pilot told her to jump out. She was nervous but she took off her helmet, gathered up her courage, and jumped 50 meters into the ocean. After two minutes, her crew was there to take her back to land. Her scariest moment was when she was trying to get on a ladder to get on a ship and she fell down underwater and was in-between the Navy Ship and the Zodiac.

Near the end of the presentation she gave us a “Mini Boot-camp.” In this we had done a wall sit and some push-ups. It was really fun!

P.O. Balog made some connections to our current social studies unit on Power & Authority.  She reminded us about the importance of voting and how we can do things everyday to work as a team and show kindness to others.  Please ask your kids tonight what they learned about.
